Joel Norris has been a professor of climate and atmospheric sciences at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography since 2000. On the teaching side he belongs to the Climate-Ocean-Atmosphere Program with affiliations in the Climate Sciences, Physical Oceanography, and Applied Ocean Science Curricular Groups. On the research side he belongs to the Oceans and Atmosphere Section in the Climate, Atmospheric Sciences, and Physical Oceanography Division.

Joel Norris received a B.S. in Planetary Science (Geophysics) from the California Institute of Technology in June 1990 and a Ph.D. from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington in August 1997. Before coming to Scripps he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Advanced Study Program at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and a visiting scientist in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University while working at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.

In 2010-2011 Joel Norris worked with the CERES team at NASA Langley Research Center during a year-long sabbatical.

Since January 2018, Joel Norris has been an Editor for the Journal of Climate.
